Through helping a local candidate run for Town supervisor, I learned that our town’s finances are a disaster. I already had concerns about how high our property taxes are, as well as concerns about potential overdevelopment in the rural part of town where I live. Too few of the same people were in control of our town for too long, and their decisions were not always in the best interests of residents. As a lifelong resident who never considered running for office before, I decided to run because we need candidates who are not beholden to special interests or political parties.
The town’s accounting practices have been a disaster for years which led to the town having to request a 4 million dollar bailout from NY state this year. We need to get the finances straightened out so that the town doesn’t have to drastically cut services or significantly raise taxes.
